We will all convene in Aspen before heading over the pass.
Scenic narrated tours of Twin Lakes, located among the highest peaks in Colorado. Tour includes both the upper and lower glacially formed lakes and a tour of the historic Interlaken resort, established in the late 1800's as a getaway for wealthy mining tycoons. Magnificent scenery, information about the geology of the area, wildlife, history, and folklore await!
We will pack a picnic. Please bring: wear appropriate shoes, light jackets, and sunscreen. They provide water on the boat.
As we begin our tour through Twin Lakes, one is astonished to see magnificent mountain peaks reflected in the water. These are the highest mountains in the Rockies. Also impressive is the silence. A gentle breeze, water lapping, just sounds of nature. A flock of geese honks overhead, the only honking you will hear. Wave to a passing canoe or kayak. We describe the monumental work of glaciers that formed both the lakes, and most of the land around us. We pass through a channel to the lower Twin Lakes and observe people fishing on the shore. Then we head for Interlaken, the historic resort that was built in the late 1800's. Our boat lands right at Interlaken, usually in front of the Dexter cabin, a short walk from the shore. We explore all the old buildings at Interlaken, getting a sense of what it was like when people came to enjoy Twin Lakes over 100 years ago. Who knows, maybe some of them are still there, in a place that is too beautiful to leave. And yet, we must return to where we started, perhaps leaving a part of ourselves to enjoy it forever.
